Observed timescales of evapotranspiration response to soil moisture

چکیده
[1] The sensitivity of evapotranspiration (ET) to soil moisture storage plays an important role in the landatmosphere system. Yet little is known about its magnitude, or its dependence on vegetation, soil, and/or climate characteristics. Here we relate the sensitivity to the timescale of ET decay in absence of rainfall, and show that it can thus be derived from time series of ET alone. We analyze ET observations from 15 vegetated sites covering a range of climates conditions, yielding timescales of 15– 35 days. Longer timescales (weaker ET sensitivity) are found in regions with seasonal droughts, or at sites with woody vegetation. We compare observed values with output of different land surface models (LSMs) from the Second Global Soil Wetness Project, revealing large inter-model differences and significant differences with observations. Our methodology can lead to improved representation of soil moisture effects on ET in LSMs. Citation: Teuling, A. J., S. I. Seneviratne, C. Williams, and P. A. Relationship between topography, land use and soil moisture in loess hillslopes
The relationship between topography, land use, and topsoil moisture storage is investigated for a small catchment with undulating deep loess hilslopes in the south of the Netherlands. For a period of 10 months, soil moisture profiles have been measured weekly at 15 locations throughout the catchment. A Generalized Additive Model was employed to find relationships between the various factors inf...
متن کاملStochastic soil water balance under seasonal climates.
The analysis of soil water partitioning in seasonally dry climates necessarily requires careful consideration of the periodic climatic forcing at the intra-annual timescale in addition to daily scale variabilities. Here, we introduce three new extensions to a stochastic soil moisture model which yields seasonal evolution of soil moisture and relevant hydrological fluxes. These approximations al...
متن کاملAnalysis and mapping of field-scale soil moisture variability using high-resolution, ground-based data during the Southern Great Plains 1997 (SGP97) Hydrology Experiment
Soil moisture is an important state variable in the hydrologic cycle, and its spatiotemporal distribution depends on many geophysical processes operating at different spatial and temporal scales. To achieve a better accounting of the water and energy budgets at the land-atmosphere boundary, it is necessary to better understand the spatiotemporal variability of soil moisture under different hydr...

The purpose of this study is to test the ability of the Land Surface Model SECHIBA to simulate water budget and particularly soil moisture at two different scales: regional and local. The model is forced by NLDAS data set at 1/8th degree resolution over the 1997–1999 period. SECHIBA gives satisfying results in terms of evapotranspiration and runoff over the US compared with four other land surf...

Soil moisture predictability and the associated predictability of continental climate are explored as an initialvalue problem, using a coupled land–atmosphere model with prescribed ocean surface temperatures. Ensemble simulations are designed to assess the extent to which initial soil moisture fields explain variance of future predictands (soil moisture, near-surface air temperature, and precip...
